135 miles around oahu
On April 5, 2025, history teacher and cross country coach Mr. Roman Chavez of Pacific Buddhist Academy will be running the circumference of Oahu (~135 miles) in an attempt to raise $10,000 for PBA's athletic program.
Since 2023, Roman has embraced the challenge of ultra running, which involves distances beyond the standard 26.2-mile marathon. Alongside his passion for running, Roman remains a committed teacher, mentor, and coach at Pacific Buddhist Academy.
About Mr. Chavez
Roman Chavez grew up in El Monte, California, just outside Los Angeles. He graduated from the University of California at Santa Barbara and joined Pacific Buddhist Academy in July 2024, drawn by the school’s mission of providing a high-quality education focused on peace-building and character development.
The ultra marathoner recently placed in the top 1% of 2024 Honolulu Marathon runners, finishing with a time of 3 hours and 18 minutes!
“The fitness room we have now is functional, but I know what it could be to unlock even more potential for our athletes,” said Roman.
A former high school cross country runner himself, Roman knows the power of sports to connect and transform lives. His students describe him as a coach who goes the extra mile - ensuring they are supported and inspired. By undertaking this incredible feat, Roman hopes to shine a spotlight on student need.
