Class of 2016 Alumna Lia Montana Shares About Her Army Position in Korea
Patriot Launching Station Enhanced Operator/Maintainer (14T) Lia Montana is currently stationed in Suwon, Korea. “Suwon is a large city about an hour south of Seoul,” explained Lia. “Korea is such a unique country because it holds on tightly to tradition, but is also extremely
advanced when it comes to technology and other societal advances. It’s very impressive!”
Lia spoke on some of her favorite experiences in Korea saying, “I’ve enjoyed working with the Korean Augmentation to the United States Army. They are often very shy when first approaching American soldiers. After introducing yourself, they will talk with you and want to show you around Korea! In the Army, I feel grateful for the other soldiers I've met because they’re from all over the world. I’ve met individuals from Europe, Africa, South America, Asia and many areas around the United States. It’s amazing to see that despite our differences and backgrounds, we are able to work together to complete the mission. That’s an amazing feeling.”
The tight bonds that Lia has formed have helped her navigate through a variety of experiences. “The weather in Korea is insane. I work outside all day for my job and have seen soldiers pass out from heat exhaustion. I’ve also seen soldiers experience hypothermia. We always say, “Embrace the suck,” whenever someone is going through a less than ideal situation. Being far away from family, I have formed irreplaceable friendships,” said Lia.
Lia is remembered fondly by her former teachers. Her advisor and former PBA teacher Jennifer Stierli said, "Lia would show compassion for her classmates no matter what social group they belonged to. Although she was shy or reserved at times, she extended genuine kindness to others."
Lia reflected on her time at PBA saying, “PBA prepared me for post graduation life by giving me an open mind. Lessons that I learned in high school prepared me for the harsh reality that the world often is. I also learned to cherish every moment and see the underlying beauty in every situation - even if it may be hard to find initially.”
