Licensed Acupuncturist Promotes Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle

While many depend on western science to cure pain, Reynold Wong ’07 carries on cultural Chinese traditions through his career as a fitness coach and acupuncturist in Los Angeles, California. He encourages his clients to try herbal remedies, eat certain foods depending on the time of year, and stay active, enjoying sports such as martial arts. Practicing these healthy habits has brought him joy in his life and he hopes to inspire patients to do the same.

After receiving a degree in kinesiology and rehabilitation science at the University of Hawaii, Reynold continued to study the human body and healing through massage school. “At the integrative health and sports clinic where I work, we offer chiropractic,

massage, and exercise therapy, as well as acupuncture, all with efforts to help people live a healthier and pain-free life,” said Reynold.

He explained that he has seen acupuncture heal human bodies when other more traditional options have failed. “One challenge is that acupuncture isn't very known to be the first line of treatment in the western medical field. When a patient comes in for pain, they've usually tried almost every other treatment possible. When they finally get to me, the pain is even more severe than it originally was. I encourage patients to come in immediately so that I am able to manage that pain more efficiently. Fortunately, a lot of insurance companies nowadays accept acupuncture and other integrative modalities instead of going towards the medication route, which doesn't necessarily treat the root of the problem,” Reynold said.

Along with acupuncture, Reynold’s job includes assisting patients with their rehab

exercises and leading different types of classes from extreme boot camp classes to senior low impact exercises classes. “The acupuncture, exercise, and massage industries complement each other well and push for an overall healthy way of living,” explained Reynold. “This mindset can help a lot of people, especially because the cost of treating a patient has gone up immensely in recent years.”

Reynold hopes to return to Honolulu where he wants to open his own integrative health clinic. “My goal is to educate patients before they’re in pain so that they’re able to

live a happier and pain-free life in the future.”
